Project Background:
In 2009, Canada signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Jordan, the first of its kind with an Arab country expected to play a role in increasing bilateral trade in goods between the two countries, and create new export opportunities. It also ensures that Jordanian goods have the right of custom and tariff free entry into the Canadian market, while Canadian goods will access the Jordanian market subject to a gradual decrease in customs tariffs over a period of three to five years. Canada also signed a Bilateral Investment Treaty, a Labour Cooperation Agreement and an Environment Cooperation Agreement with Jordan.
In the same year, CIDA announced steps to render Canada’s international assistance more effective, more focused and more accountable. According to these new steps, CIDA support will focus around three priority themes:
- Increasing food security;
- Stimulating sustainable economic growth;
- Securing the future of children and youth.
This new approach helps ensure that efforts to strengthen the environment, improve gender equality, promote respect for human rights and support strong governance practices and institutions will be integrated as part of CIDA’s approach to international assistance.
